So, a few years ago (over ten really…), I first watched the Harry Potter movies. I was obsessed! At the time only the first four movies had come out, but I re-watched those four movies over, and over, and over again. I was in awe. The magic, the adventure. I had longed to be in the world of Hogwarts, even at the age of seven.
Then after many self-debates, I read the books at age fourteen. I didn’t want to ruin my love of the movies by finding out all the information they didn’t put in them. However, the books taught me so much more than the movies ever did. J. K. Rowling, taught me so many valuable life lessons, things I wouldn’t have learnt until many years later in life. And I most likely would have learnt them the hard way. Through mistakes, and hardship. But I learnt these lessons by reading, and falling in love with the boy who lived under the stairs for eleven years. Some of the most touching, and inspiring quotes I have ever read were in the Harry Potter series. It would take hours to list them all, and I’m sure you don’t have time you read the entire series at this moment, so here are the few that I found most the most engaging and touching.
“It is our choices (Harry), that show us what we truly are, far more than our abilities.” – Albus Dumbledore
“We’ve all got both light and dark inside us. What matters is the part we choose to act on. That’s who we really are.” – Sirius Black
“It matters not what someone is born, but what they grow to be.” – Albus Dumbledore
“I am what I am an’ I’m not ashamed. ‘Never be ashamed,’ my ol’ dad used ter say, ‘there’s some who’ll hold it against you, but they’re not worth bothern’ with.’” – Rubeus Hagrid
In all honesty, I live by these quotes. It doesn’t matter what others think or say, as long as you are true to yourself. It’s your decisions in life that matter, not where you came from or what gifts you have. And it is your decisions, that determine who you will grow to be.
Something else that occurred to me when indulging in these stories, was that, if something bad happens, and you can’t change the result, don’t stress over it. If you make a mistake, and can fix it, do it. Make it better. If you can’t – let it go. Don’t ruin yourself over something out of your control.
It is for these reasons that J.K. Rowling inspires me. To be someone who can teach others through writing. To be able to captivate people so intensely that they cry and laugh and feel all the emotions of a character in a book. I know it would be impossible to even come close to the magic that J.K. Rowling has created, but I will use my creativity to the best of my ability, and I will strive to achieve my ends. After all, that is the Slytherin way. Ambition, and determination.
I’m sure I’ll delve further into my love for Harry Potter at another timer, but that’s all for now. I’ll talk to you later.
